Jerry came rushing down the stairs with his favorite cow toy, Mr. Mootastic. â€Å"How many times did I tell you to get rid of that toy?† Jilly asked. â€Å"It doesn’t bring any good luck with getting the supposed ‘good’ chocolate powder for milk.† â€Å"Yes it does!† Jerry replied. â€Å"Remember that one time when I didn’t bring Mr. Mootastic?† â€Å"Yeah, I do,† Jilly told Jerry â€Å"And it was because the store ran out of the powder.† â€Å"But†¦but†¦but†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"No ‘buts,’† Jilly said. â€Å"And if you don’t want the toy to be gone, then at least leave it behind. It was so hot that most of the cars rolled up their windows and turned on the air conditioner. Jilly thought that she and her brother can easily make it through the traffic, but she was quite wrong. â€Å"How much longer do we have to drive?† Jerry asked while exhausted. â€Å"Can you at least turn on the air conditioner?† â€Å"Listen Jerry, I don’t know,† Jilly replied. â€Å"And no, I told you already that we don’t have the air conditioner. But man, I’m thirsty† â€Å"I’m thirsty too†¦but how about some bottles of water?† â€Å"What?† â€Å"Uh, I had them here in my backpack†¦but now they’re-?† â€Å"*Sigh* This is why I should never trust you to get water.† â€Å"But wait!† Jerry exclaimed. â€Å"I did get water but they transformed into bottles of milk!† He waved the bottles of milk in the air to make his sist er see them in the mirror. Overcoming Learning hasn’t always come easy to me. I have struggled with about everything. If I were to list the two most common ones I struggle with all the time, it would be English class and French class. Now I understand everybody makes a mistake every now and then, but I was one of those people who at one point needed help all the time. In pre-school and kindergarten, I was amazing I knew all my ABC’s. I could even read a basic sentence or two, my favorite book was the â€Å"Hungry Caterpillar†. Toward the end of my kindergarten year my granddaddy got very sick, I started to struggle in school. I even told my teacher to send my work home because I needed to take care of him. I was no longer making the straight A’s and B’s. I kind of just†¦show more content†¦Eighth grade English was a breeze, I sailed right throw it. They helped me so much. I no longer had a big problem with English. A new problem aroused, my problem wasn’t with English now, but it was still a problem with a language. In about ninth grade I started taking French. I took French for many reason, I loved the language and my grandma took it. I had the same French teacher for French one and two. She was a bit off and rude. She would do cartwheels and jump up in the air in class if you got something right, but she would also embarrass you in front of the whole class if you didn’t know the answer. My first day in class it was fun, I understood what was going on. As the year went on in French one, it started to get harder. I didn’t really understand much of what was going on, so I asked questions. My French teacher was kind of like my fourth-grade teacher, if I asked a question she would very rudely explain it. After she would explain it she would say â€Å"I don’t know why you don’t understand, it not hard†. She made that statement a few times to me, I soon just stopped asking questions and just tried my best to pass. I passed French one—just barely—then prayed I wouldn’t get her again. Either he hadn’t expected to find me here at all, or he’d expected to find me furry. His face hardened, his eyes cooled; his only greeting was a nod. I swallowed the thickness at the back of my throat. How could he act as if we’d shared nothing, as if we barely knew each other at all? And they called me a beast. I forced my attention to Nic’s companion, an elderly man, at least seventy-five, perhaps more, who peered at me with eyes both dark and sad enough to belong on a basset hound. His hair was snow white – but at least he had some – his face weathered from age and the elements. He appeared as if he spent hours on various lakes pulling fish from both warm water and ice. Lord knows why. â€Å"Hello,† he greeted. â€Å"I’m Dr. Watchry.† â€Å"Sir, I’m with the – â€Å" I broke off. I’d almost said Jger-Suchers, but how much did the man know? Dr. Watchry glanced at Nic, then back at me. â€Å"FBI?† I merely smiled, unable to give voice to that lie. Nic didn’t correct me, instead introducing me. â€Å"This is Dr. Hanover. Research scientist.† â€Å"How interesting,† Dr. Watchry murmured. â€Å"I’ve always been fascinated with research, but I haven’t had time to pursue any. I’ve been the only physician in Fairhaven for nearly fifty years. Also the medical examiner for this county.† Whoa! No wonder he was sad. â€Å"Shouldn’t you have retired by now?† â€Å"If there’d been anyone willing to take my place, I would have.† â€Å"No one wants the job? It makes their mind and body sick. Heavy drug users do not live long, dying either from health complications or dying on the streets, or if they get lucky they go to jail. In the following p aragraphs I am going to talk about the most popular drugs from my point of view and my experience with some of them. I tried marijuana when I was in High School. Marijuana affects everyone differently, some people like it and some do not. After four years of occasional smoking I decided to quit last year. The good thing about marijuana is that you cannot get physically addicted to it. Many people including myself decided to stop smoking, and many have done it successfully. The effects that I experienced are: extreme stupidity, laughing for no reason, paranoia, and extreme laziness next morning. Paranoia is the worst effect of marijuana. When a person is paranoid, he/she starts thinking about the negative things which are hiding deep inside his or her mind. I’ve enjoyed marijuana in the beginning, but then I found myself getting depressed, and that’s when I decided to stop using it. Smoking marijuana everyday can cause serious health complications like, lost of memory, drop in sex hormones, changes in mood, and lost of energy and appetite. These changes are temporary in adults, but researchers suspect that young people can develop long-range development problems. Personally I would not recommend this drug to anyone. I’ll never forget my first week of freshman year at Stony Brook. I went to a party, where I tried ecstasy. This was an experience of a lifetime. I’d never felt so happy and excited in my whole life. I was very friendly to the people around me, even though I didn’t know anyone there. By the end of the party I was everybody’s friend. Ecstasy is most commonly used in rave clubs, because one of the effects of ecstasy is increase of energy. You can get psychologically addicted to ecstasy very quickly since it brings so many new feelings of happiness, but it is very hard to get physically addicted. The problem with ecstasy is that it can cause liver damage and researchers suspect that it also may decrease amount of serotonin from the spine. A Collection of Traditional and Literary Ballad Poems The ballad is at the intersection of poetry and song, from traditional folk ballads crystallizing out of the mists of ancient oral traditions to modern literary ballads in which poets use the old narrative forms to retell traditional legends or to tell stories of their own.   The Evolution of Balladry A ballad is simply a narrative poem or song, and there are many variations on balladry. Traditional folk ballads began with the anonymous wandering minstrels of the Middle Ages, who handed down stories and legends in these poem-songs, using a structure of stanzas and repeated refrains to remember, retell, and embellish local tales. Many of these folk ballads were collected in the 17th and 18th centuries by scholars like Harvard professor Francis James Child and poets like  Robert Burns  and Sir Walter Scott. Two of the ballads in this collection are examples of this type of traditional ballad, anonymous retellings of local legends: the spooky fairy tale â€Å"Tam Lin† and â€Å"Lord Randall,† which reveals the story of a murder in the question-and-answer dialogue between a mother and son. Characteristics Of Gifted Underachievers Education Essay This selective review of literature aims to establish the characteristics of gifted underachievers, know the causative factors contributing to their underachievement, understand various strategies schools and teachers could adopt in reversing student underachievement, and present the implications of the aforementioned. Characteristics of gifted underachievers It is important for educators to have a clear understanding as to who are considered gifted underachievers in the classroom. Amazingly, the number of highly intellectual students who had not achieved well in school is as high as 50% (Schultz, 2005). Comprising this group is a large population of underserved or neglected talented students by gifted programs. If this number is not provided much needed attention, it is imperative therefore that this issue has to be addressed. A survey of existing literature seemed to disagree not only on the definition of underachievement but the legitimacy of categorizing gifted underachievement as an academic behavior. The controversial study in Moon (2004) sent shockwaves to the scientific community by stating that some researchers believed underachievement is simplistically attributed to test error. Yet scientists like Rimm have devoted their entire professional careers reversing underachievement. Chaffey (2004) emphasized that the underachievement definition adopted by the teacher will serve as basis for identifying underachievers and consequently the students receiving appropriate plan of action. Having successfully recognized gifted underachievers in the classroom will allow teachers’ expectations to be shifted upwards as research strongly suggests that improved academic performance in underachieving students is linked to high teacher expectations. Various studies point to its multi-faceted nature which has sometimes muddied educational experts in the field; but regardless of origin, underachievement is defined as the discrepancy between expected and actual ach ievement. Morando (2003) of the Columbiana Co. Educational Service Center said that gifted underachievers tend to be disorganized and their schoolwork is either incomplete or missing. Though IQ scores are very high compared to the average, there is a consistent decline in academic ability and exhibit disinterest in attending school. Moreover, the student may also be a loner, has low self-esteem, emotionally frustrated, and is economically disadvantaged. Lau and Chan (2001) described the motivational characteristics of underachieving junior high school students in Hong Kong after subjecting them to various measures namely Raven Progressive Matrices Test, vocabulary test, standardized achievement test, Marsh self description questionnaire, Causal dimension scale, Eccles and Wigfield’s expectancy value model, and Motivated strategies for learning questionnaire. The results demonstrated low academic self-concept, poor attainment value in learning as well as deficiencies in utiliz ing effective learning methods. The study also disproved the conclusion of Western researches that HK underachievers demonstrate maladaptive attribution patterns. Chow, Chow, and Ku-Yu (2003) conducted a case study involving five underachieving gifted students and used Whitmore’s checklist in characterizing their behaviors. A Stereotypical Teenager Essay Loud, obnoxious, rebellious, out of control, and up to no good†¦ these are just a few of a wide number of stereotypes that are attributed to American teenagers. What is it about teenagers that make the rest of society seem to turn against them? I believe that there are many misconceptions about teenagers. Many people in different generations sincerely believe that all teenagers are up to no good, and are guaranteed trouble no matter where they are. I am not arguing that teenagers like that don’t exist, because there are plenty of them out there, but it bothers me that one type of teenager has been able to spoil the image of all other teenagers. Personally I think that these stereotypes apply more to me because I am a male. In addition to being a male teenager, I also have noticed that people think negatively of me because I wear a longer hair style than what is typically expected in society. Some people grow long hair to show rebellion, or to be unique, but I wouldn’t classify myself into either of those categories, I simply enjoy having it more than short hair. But because of that, many members of society link certain stereotypes of male teenagers to me because I show long hair. I could be considered many different things including: rebellious, troubled, angry, arrogant, or any other sort of stereotype out there. How could anyone possibly claim to know all of these false accusations simply based on my age, and my gender? At times it can be bothersome when people take certain precautions around teenagers, because they believe that we are all reckless, and dangerous. Parents will cross to the opposite side of the street with their kids, people clear sidewalks when walking, other drivers tense up on the road, and all while this is happening, other people will keep one eye carefully watching, just to make sure that all of the rotten teenagers don’t do anything dangerous. I sometimes think that people see me and other teenagers as giant, shiny explosives that are about to detonate, so everyone else needs to distance themselves as much and as quickly as possible. Just because a teenager happens to be walking around outside, that should in no way trigger a response where people feel that it isn’t safe to be near  teenagers. Although it does bother me, I can also see a point of view where I would do the same thing. If I saw someone outside that looked a little bit off-beat to me, I would most likely go a different path as well. However, that raises the question, why does society take in all of these stereotypes and live all of their lives believing false statements? All of it is ridiculous I believe. Anyone that knows me will be able to explain that I am the exact opposite of a stereotypical teenager, so no one should need to take precautions if they see me out somewhere. A stereotypical teenager would most likely be thought of being connected to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs in some way, shape, or form; I on the other hand do not do any of those things, and am strongly against them. Because I do not consider myself anywhere close to a stereotypical teenager, it does bother me when people mistake me for doing those types of activities. All of these common stereotypes don’t do any good for the people who actually work hard, and try to do something with their lives. For many people, stereotyping does more than just become a bothersome hassle. For a handful of teenagers, the effect of stereotyping makes them feel pressured into behaving like a stereotypical teenager. For example, some people do drugs and alcohol because they are expected to by society’s stereotypes, so someone may think, â€Å"Oh, I am a teenager now, I guess because other people are drinking then I have to as well.† I don’t even see peer pressure as that much of an issue here, people tend to start drinking or doing drugs voluntarily; more often than not, there isn’t peer pressure that is forcing them into doing something. And that creates an entire roundabout of madness. To simplify this; many people start acting like stereotypical teenagers, because they feel that they need to in order to be a â€Å"normal† teenager. But that in turn makes society cast out teenagers, when it is actually those same members of society who created these stereotypes for teenagers to follow.
